May is Stroke Awareness Month
Here’s Why it Matters to Me
I’m always renewed in May. Not necessarily because the days are longer and the sun a bit brighter and warmer as we emerge back and get out again cautiously from our isolation, but that certainly helps too. I’m renewed each May 1st as it happens to be Stroke Awareness Month, and because personally it represents closure and rebirth following my own stroke.
This past May 1st, I celebrated 14 years since my stroke and the day I awoke at Mass General Hospital following surgery to correct a congenital heart defect (PFO) that caused my stroke.
Along with this challenge for my entire family it was also the healthcare delays and uncertain care pathway options that led me down the path of patient advocacy and engagement to improve health outcomes for others in their own medical journey. In fact, this is how this know-stroke blog began and I’m still at it to this present day which shows there is still work to be done. I now continue this cause strengthened with new partners that have stepped up to continue to enable this mission.
Along with my co-founding partner at EnableUs, Michael Garrow we continue our common mission driven goal of improving life after stroke for survivors and caregivers. Earlier this month, we mentioned we’d be launching a new effort to expand the reach of our stroke advocacy audience through podcasting. With the live launch of the Know Stroke podcast we’ve now also expanded upon the success and outreach of our Next Step Forward Program we launched in May 2000 during the height of the pandemic. If you missed the first episode I suggest you give it a listen as Michael and I once again share our own ‘Why’ and journeys that led us to EnableUs.
If you missed the launch I think you’ll agree we got off to a fast start in May recording and producing four podcast episodes and the month is not over yet! Here’s what you may have missed and the links to each episode.
